0 PLASU To Graduate 344 Students At Its 1st Convocation Ceremony

The Plateau State University (PLASU) is set to graduate a total of 344 graduands in its first convocation slated for Saturday, Feb. 4.

This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Doknan Sheni, in a pre-convocation press briefing held in Bokkos on Monday.

According top him, the figure composed of two graduating sets.

He further revealed that three students are graduating with first class degrees, while many have bagged second class upper degrees.

He said that management was “very excited’’ over the reality of the convocation “after many set backs’’, and thanked Governor Simon Lalong for the feat.

“The two sets had 644 students, but 300 students have one issue or the other and would not be convocating along others,’’ he said.

It was learnt that three persons – General Yakubu Gowon, Prof. Julius Okoje and the Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, would receive Honorary Degrees at the convocation.

0 FG Reminds ASUP Of "No Work, No Pay" Policy Amidst Its Warning Strike

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige has reminded the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), who are currently on a warning strike of the ‘no work, no pay’ policy of Federal Government.

In his words, “I wish to remind the trade unions that there is nothing like a “Warning Strike” in our National Industrial Relations System (NIRS) - a strike is a strike and is subject to all the rules governing strike in the world of work.

“Accordingly, the provisions of Section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act, CAP. T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004, will apply regarding the law of “No Work No Pay’’ by workers/employees notwithstanding any other circumstances in any section of the Act.”

He urged the union to suspend the strike action and embrace dialogue as the government is fully ready to dialogue with them.

0 FUK Matriculates 1,569 Students For 2016/2017 Academic Session

Federal University, Kashere (FUK) has matriculated 1,569 students from different segment of the country for 2016/2017 Academic Session.

In a speech, he Vice Chancellor, Professor Alhassan Gani, said the past performances of the institution in terms of student output, quality of teaching and conducive learning earned them the attention and they are striving to sustain the effort in providing quality education.

The VC further charged the students to take their studies seriously by promptly attending lectures, reporting all assignments and participating in all other academic activities enshrined in the curriculum.

He said he is determined to see the institution become a centre of learning, he mentioned their achievements within a short period of time which includes; accreditation of its programmes and the expansion of the University Clinic into a health Centre.

He further stated that the University has four Faculties, 19 Academic Departments and 34 Academic programmes which out of the 22 Degree programmes presented to the National Universities Commission (NUC) for accreditation, all the five programmes in Faculty of Science and four in Faculty of Humanities secured full status while the rest were given interim.

He extended his gratitude to the president for allocating funds for the construction of buildings for faculties of Agriculture and Education and Chancellery for administration in the University.

0 LAUTECH ASUU Yet To Commence Academic Activities Despite Resumption, Gives Conditions

 The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso chapter, on Monday stated conditions that must be met before the ongoing industrial action will finally come to an end which will see academic activities fully resume in the school.

It will be recalled that the school announced January 27th, 2017 as the reopening date of the school.

However, ASUU rejected the resumption date, declaring that it had not called off its industrial action which began on Sept. 19, 2016.

According to the chairman of ASUU LAUTECH chapter, Dr Biodun Olaniran, while the school had resumed, academic activities were yet to commence as a result of the ongoing strike.

In his words, “Government should provide an agreeable plan of defraying the indebtedness of the outstanding N7.1 billion to the university.

“They should issue a clear commitment to the settlement of arrears of sundry allowances accumulated over the years,’’ he said.

“Salary is not the real issue. Our major demand borders most on the funding of the institution.

“Internally Generated Revenue can never be a substitute to the funding of the university,’’ he said.

0 MAPOLY To Be Upgraded To A University Of Science And Technology

A bill seeking to upgrade Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, (MAPOLY), to a University of Science and Technology has been passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

The motion for the 3rd reading of the bill which is entitled, “A bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Technology and for Matters of Administration and Discipline of Students Connected Therewith." was moved by the Majority Leader Adeyinka Mafe and seconded by the Minority Leader, Olawale Alausa.

Also, Victor Fasanya, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, moved the motion for the adoption of the report of the committee set up for that purpose and was seconded by Adejuwon Olufowobi.

While presenting the report of the committee, Mr. Fasanya described the bill as historic, adding that it would encourage the people of the state to venture into science and technology.

“We need to encourage our people to go into science and technology so that we have entrepreneurs like they do in other advanced country.

“The university will have two deputy vice chancellors , academic and administration, while the registrar should be the secretary of the Governing Council.

“The compulsory age of academic staff of the university shall be 65 years except for persons on professorial cadre which shall be 70 years, ” he said.

0 UNIOSUN Resumes Academic Activities, Announces Freshers Orientation 2016/17

This is to inform all students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) that the Management at its meeting of Wednesday, 25th January, 2017 reviewed the closure of the University following students' demonstration caused by Police brutality on two students that happened on Saturday, 21st January, 2017.

Management observed that relative peace has returned to the University and decided that the University be re-opened for normal academic activities on Monday, 30th January, 2017.

It is the belief of the Management that students will reciprocate this magnanimity of re­-opening and fulfill their own obligations by paying their school fees and remaining law abiding.

Orientation programmes for fresh students will commence on Tuesday, 31st January, 2017 and end on Friday, 3rd February, 2017.
